Telecom Billing 101: The Experts Tell All - Revised

Posted by admin, February 6, 2016

Driven by demand for enhanced mobility—70 percent of Americans now have Internet-connected devices and 80 percent of said devices can connect to LTE/4G broadband—companies are increasingly looking to UC and cloud services to improve response times, increase employee productivity and reduce operational costs. Not only this, but service providers and resellers know that they need to add new services into the mix to keep customers satisfied and loyal.

To help meet these initiatives, CFOs and other finance decision makers are turning to billing as a service; however, the world of telecom billing can be complex. Between cloud catalogs, tax compliancy, online management, and usage and data rates, there’s a lot of ground that service providers and/or resellers need to cover if they are looking to capitalize on billing as a service.

To help bridge these gaps, BluLogix, one of the top telecom billing systems, recently held its webinar entitled “Telecom Billing: Industry Experts Speak” to demystify the telecom billing process. The information included:

• The unique requirements for telecom billing and how a telecom billing platform addresses them

• How to calculate telecom taxes both easily and accurately based on such things as service address, tax codes and jurisdictions

• Options for reporting and filing taxes and fees, as well as compliancy advise Moderated by Tara Seals, editor in chief of GlobalVision Magazine, the webinar boasted an array of talent including Brent Reeves, VP of business development at SureTax, LLC; Matt LaHood, CEO, GSA; Samantha Maqueo, VP of regulatory affairs, GSA; and our very own CEO Tim Cook.

Cook explained that one of the most dramatic technological changes occurring in the BSS/OSS world is multi-tenant service, which enables providers to read, rate and mediate multiple call detail records (CDRs) and/or usage detail records (UDRs) and then create bundled service packages from multiple service provider components. “This multi-tenant capability brings a new level of technology to the industry in integrating the supply chain,” he said. “At BluLogix, for example, we can measure, rate and mediate services from as many upstream providers as any service provider wants us to, and we can offer that as a service, so it’s very scalable and easy to get into.”

According to Reeves, billing and compliance are two critical components that nothing can be done about without understanding exactly how you need to apply tax moving forward, including what you’re supposed to collect, how you’re supposed to collect it and why. A number of things contribute to the growing complexity of billing and tax compliancy, including adding customers in more states and local jurisdictions, proper tax applicability, and bundling products and services. “You can choose to either purchase a database of rates and rules as it relates to telecom services or you can choose to use a calculation engine,” says Reeves, who stressed that your biller also needs to have a clear understanding of compliance rates and issues.

Here at BluLogix, we take pride in being able to offer customers and industry leaders educational opportunities to broaden their horizons. We encourage you to spend some time listening to the webinar in full, as it offers plenty more invaluable advice and knowledge.
